5 min 48 sec film, <1+1= > counteracts our society’s absolute value grading system. Generically, when we measure values, we must use the rule where 1 + 1 = 2. Metaphysically, however, in natural phenomena, such as in light and water, 1 + 1 = 1 or something immeasurable. The film visualizes this naturalistic flow of matter that is ephemeral yet infinite and intergalactic in both macro- and micro-perspective.
Furthermore, <1+1= > challenges the gender stereotype in Action Painting/Gestural Expressionism. Since the advent of Jackson Pollock, pour-art has been easily associated with a particular muscularity, even with eroticism. Instead of visually substituting my female identity for the male domain, I removed the artist’s direct hand to neutralize the very act of creating abstract paintings.
Ultimately, <1+1 = > asserts that it is never one way or another; it’s about trying to harmonize forever, as in the film the white drips constantly float and merge together like the star-dusts in the space.
"Constructed Fiction" (건설된 픽션) 을 제목으로 미국 워싱턴세인트루이스대학교에서 그룹 쇼로 전시 된 <1+1= >는 이미 사회에 건설되어 있는 허구적인 등급체계를 거스르는 자연의 성질을 보여주는 설치영상이다. 물질적 사회는 1 더하기 1은 2라는 숫자적 차원에서 답을 구하는 체계를 편애한다. 하지만 빛이나 액체 등의 형이상적이고 자연적인 현상을 본다면, 1 더하기 1은 1, 2, 때론 3이 되기도 한다. 작품은 빛과 그림자, 유와 무를 상징하는 흑과 백으로 불완전하고 순간적이나 아름답고 무한한 자연의 순리를 물감으로 표현한다. 어두운 공간에 이중으로 벽에 설치된 영상은 관객에게 눈이 내리거나 별똥별이 쏟아지는 광경을 보고 있는 듯한 환상을 준다.
나아가, <1+1 = >는 Jackson Pollock (잭슨 폴릭)의 등장 이 후, 화폭에 물감을 뿌려서 그리는 액션 패인팅과 그에 따른 추상화들을 백인 남성의 예술이라고 보는 역사적, 사화적, 계급적, 그리고 성적 관점을 중립화시키고자 한다. 작가는 모멘텀으로써 물감을 계속해서 움직이지만, 직접적인 출연을 삼가함으로 작가의 성격보다 작가의 존재 자체와 창조하고 있다는 행위에 의미를 둔다.
궁극적으로 <1+1 = >는 1 더하기 1 이라는 가장 기본적인 수학 문제의 답을 관객에게 양보하여 양이 아닌 질의 대한 가치를 생각하게 해준다. 작품 속에서 크고 작은 물감이 눈송이처럼 끊임없이 모이고 흩어지듯, 같은 성질이기에 끝없이 결합하고 분해되는 자연의 순리 안에 분명 인간도 있다고 작가는 믿는 바이다.
